To the Store Clerk Who Left Me Totally Without Words – Kudos to You
The scene was a Sunday morning, and I was in a foul mood, refueling the family car. It was one of those petrol stations that also functions as a grocery store, so you run the risk of waiting behind people bearing baskets of somewhat expensive items. It's an awful situation to unfold when all you want is to pay for some fuel. Dreadful.
My position was fourth among those waiting. There was only person serving, a female attendant. Something stood out in her demeanor. When the faffer at the head of the line had finally paid for a cleaning product, his pastry, and some breakfast items, I was certain overhearing the cashier tell him a wonderful day. Odd. Perhaps I’d misheard, or maybe she did say it and used a mocking tone. I pondered if she could even be a supporter in my fight against faff, reflecting my irritation for individuals slowing down straightforward customers including me.
Taking a step forward, to third in the queue. The next shopper of our line discharged her fuel-only transaction with notable efficiency. And there it was again: “I hope you have a fantastic day.” In fact, it was “may your day be absolutely splendid”. An American? Here in Stourbridge? She had the accent, and no British person tells people such a cheerful phrase, or merely a pleasant day. Highly unusual. It's uncommon to find US citizens knocking around Stourbridge, certainly not employed at gas stations or anywhere else.
I was second now. Following a senior shopper dealing with a protracted effort with her carryall, her purchases, her handbag and her rewards card. This took an eternity. When she was done, she as well was wished a wonderful day. Clearly an American. I might have verified it by making a witty remark at the cashier, to observe that response their typical stare, without a smile, and state very earnestly: “You are very amusing.” But I couldn’t think of a jest to utter.
In the end, I embraced for the absolute sincerity – or an impersonation of it, essentially the same as the same thing – with which she looked me right in the eye, to my very core, and bid me an awesome day. My spirits lifted. Beneficial indeed.
