The Red Devils Poised to Secure German Forward Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

The forward, with six months left on her deal, is known as a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing will be seen as a major coup for the Women’s Super League team.

Her exit from Munich was expected since she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

Reports in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its top forwards. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the move are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line

The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • For seven straight seasons, including the most recent campaign, she achieved at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She claimed the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Building Steam at Old Trafford

Securing Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.

Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

Off the pitch, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a fan favourite since arriving in 2023.

Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability enables her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”

The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
