During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are held captive in a realm of memories forged from the recollections of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

When she finds Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

In this place, they observe a child version of Henry encounter an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a vessel into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is understood of Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would genetically impart to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the case could have held dark matter that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it maintains the stability of the parallel world. The prequel shows that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was controlled by the shadow monster in the past.

The Power of Fear

His lasting fear associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the event was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has overcome his personal demons to become stronger.

Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
