The Details Known Regarding the Fatalities of the Bondi Shooting

At least 16 people were killed and over 40 were hurt when gunmen shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, encompassing one of the alleged attackers. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting formally identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.

Here are the individuals who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

London-born rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who loved to help people”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative remarked.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She told the events leading up to the attack, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had subsequently immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still receiving treatment, with five in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. Reports indicate he was hurt and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the scene as an “horrific scene,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the attack. He said he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
