NY Launches Reporting Tool for Citizens to Submit Immigration Videos After Arrests of Four US Citizens

The state AG has introduced a recent digital platform asking citizens to provide photos and videos of ICE operations across the state. This move comes just a shortly after a high-profile immigration operation shook NYC's Chinatown, sparking mass protests.

American Citizens Arrested In Enforcement Action

A lawmaker revealed during a Wednesday press conference that four American citizens were taken into custody and kept for "almost a full day" after Tuesday's raid. Demonstrations erupted in the city on both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"Every New Yorker has the right to live without fear," the attorney general declared in a release.

"Anyone who observed and recorded ICE activity during the raid, I encourage you to provide that footage with the authorities. We are committed to reviewing these accounts and evaluating any violations of law."

Portal Features

The form includes spaces to send images and video footage of the operation, plus a area to note where it occurred. Prior to sending, users must tick a box that acknowledges that "the attorney general might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a lawsuit or public report."

Information about the Manhattan Operation

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say included dozens of federal agents, happened in a famous district of the city where counterfeit products and other goods are commonly traded in large quantities – frequently to tourists.

Footage of Tuesday's raid show several covered and weaponized federal agents restraining and arresting a man, and pushing back bystanders. Crowds of New Yorkers pursued the personnel along the roads. An armored military vehicle was observed rolling through the city streets.

Official Reactions

During a Wednesday press conference held with the rights organization, the congressman, a Democratic representative, stated that four nationals were arrested by immigration for nearly 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where four American citizens should be taken for no reason." He said the individuals were released on Wednesday with no accusations made.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not focused on deporting lawbreakers," Goldman said. "This constitutes a armed campaign to provoke unrest. It is merely a pretext to incite violence for federal officials to bring in the armed forces to stop conflict that they initiated."

Extensive Outcry

Outrage over the ICE raid quickly spread – each of the mayoral candidates condemned the raid, including Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Once again, the current administration selects heavy-handed tactics that instill panic, instead of protection. It needs to cease," one mayoral candidate declared.

NYC advocacy organizations voiced concern as well.

"ICE raided Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, hooded officers and riot gear to go after street vendors trying to make a living. This action had nothing to do with citizen protection and everything to do with frightening communities and areas," stated the head of a major immigrant coalition.

Agency Rules

Agency rules bans the arrest of American nationals and the organization has claimed it will not take into custody citizens. Yet, external research has found that more than 170 citizens have been taken illegally by ICE since the beginning of the existing leadership.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been becoming more common in the state and across the US recently.

A recent action in the city center was the first known raid on an housing center of the existing leadership. Rallies against ICE are widespread including allegations of aggression and abusive practices.

Latest, a document filed by civil rights groups stated inadequate care of expectant mothers in ICE facilities.
