Nicolas Sarkozy Set to Write Jail Diary Documenting Three Weeks Behind Bars

The ex-president of France plans a personal account in the coming weeks called Notes from a Cell, which recounts his time served in jail.

The revelation came shortly after the former president was released while he appeals his conviction for criminal conspiracy connected to efforts to secure election campaign funds linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Inner Thoughts

“In prison there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he notes in a preview, suggesting the account will focus on his musings during isolation as opposed to wider commentary on the overcrowded and crisis-hit jail system in France.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist at the prison, where there is constant sound,” he states. “The racket unfortunately never stops. But, just like the desert, inner life is strengthened in prison.”

Release Hearing: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, he was present remotely from a room in prison, depicting prison life as draining. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this difficult experience manageable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s a hardship I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, it’s very hard. It leaves a mark every inmate due to its intensity.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, who led the nation between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to serve time in prison.

Before entering jail he had said he planned to utilize the opportunity for authoring a memoir.

Cell Library

It remains unclear if he found the opportunity to read and critique the volumes he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work The Count of Monte Cristo, a plot where a blameless person ends up incarcerated later flees to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

He was placed secluded due to safety concerns in a cell approximately nine square meters including private facilities at the correctional facility located in the capital. Guards were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

Sources mentioned that he had eaten solely dairy snacks in prison due to concerns prison cuisine might have been spat on. Options were available to cook for himself but he turned this down, according to reports. Not known is if the memoir includes his dietary choices.

Legal Perspective

His attorney, who visited his client every day throughout the jail term, stated during proceedings his safety would improve released compared to inside. “He received death threats, heard shouts at night plus rapid actions in a neighbouring cell as a detainee harmed themselves.”

Charges and Sentence

His incarceration began on 21 October after a Paris court imposed five years in prison for illegal collaboration in connection with efforts to acquire political donations for his 2007 presidential race.

He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, and another court case set for next spring.
