Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Icon, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences grieves the passing of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican-born musician and actor whose distinctive voice was instrumental in spreading reggae music worldwide. He has died at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure episode followed by pneumonia,” wrote his spouse Latifa on social media. “I am grateful for his loved ones, close friends, peers in the arts and colleagues who walked with him on his journey. To all his fans around the world, please know that your encouragement was his motivation during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will honor your wishes.” The message was co-signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff was beloved for hit songs including You Can Get It If You Really Want, I Can See Clearly Now and Wonderful World, Beautiful People. His optimistic musical style and uplifting temperament earned him a large and longstanding following.

Beyond his music achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972’s crime drama “The Harder They Come”, a performance that received critical praise and is considered a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

Jimmy Cliff is one of just a handful of artists, alongside the legendary Bob Marley and others, to be awarded the esteemed Order of Merit from Jamaica.
