Diane Ladd, Famed For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Dies at the Age of 89.
This Oscar-nominated performer Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran has died 89 years old.
This star, with credits included National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, left this world in her residence in Ojai, California. Her passing was shared through a message from her offspring, award-winning actress Laura Dern.
Laura Dern, who appeared with her mother in various films including Wild at Heart, referred to her as “my wonderful hero and my profound gift of a mother”, writing that she was by her side as she died.
“She was the greatest mother, daughter, grandmother, performer, creative as well as caring individual that seemed almost dreamlike,” she wrote. “We were blessed to have her. She is now with the angels.”
Beginnings and Rise to Fame
Her initial acting years included small roles on television series such as Perry Mason whereas the seventies featured her performing with Jack Nicholson in Chinatown.
During that year, the year 1974, she shared the screen with actress Ellen Burstyn in Martin Scorsese’s celebrated comedy drama Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her role brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod as best supporting actress.
Later Decades
During the eighties, she was seen in the dramatic film Black Widow, a suspense story plus humorous film Christmas Vacation and appeared on the show Alice, a comedy program inspired by her earlier movie.
In the following decade, she received another supporting actress nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she played the mom of her biological child Dern’s character. The following year she received another nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie which included Dern.
“This was the picture that Princess Diana selected as her very favorite, and she brought me and Laura to the UK for a special screening and a party in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She sat with us, holding both our hands, and weeping, viewing our performance.”
That decade featured performances in the comedy The Cemetery Club joining her again with her co-star Burstyn, Primary Colors, a comedy about politics, featuring John Travolta and Payne’s Citizen Ruth where she played Laura Dern’s mom once more. Those years also brought her Emmy nominations for work in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire, a sitcom and Touched by an Angel.
Working with Laura Dern
She persisted in performing alongside her daughter in dramatic comedies the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and Mike White’s dark comedy series Enlightened. She additionally starred with Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, Anthony Hopkins in The World’s Fastest Indian, a film and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.
Subsequent TV appearances included Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.
Filmmaking Ventures
She additionally penned and helmed the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck that included Diane Ladd and ex-husband actor Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she said. “It was a privilege to guide him on a project. In fact, I’m the only woman in history to helm a film with her ex. I make a joke: ‘I say ladies, if you seek payback, helm a movie with your ex.’ However, I’m joking.”
Family Ties
She happened to be a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she called “a significant impact throughout my life”.
Back in 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with lung disease and told she only had half a year left but made a full recovery when her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.
“If you can take your pain and not let it back up like a sore or something, rather utilize it to discover, to illuminate the way for personal and collective growth, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
